Our Sacred Year: 4 Years of Growth and Resilience

Kham and Mallory Yawnghwe of Indigenous Box

As we reflect on 2024 —our fourth year in business—we are reminded of the significance this number holds in nehiyaw teachings. The number four represents balance, the cycles of life, and the interconnectedness of all things. As our friend and team member Jon pointed out, this connection makes our fourth year especially meaningful, a moment to honor the journey we’ve taken and the lessons we’ve learned along the way.

Jon called this year our ‘sacred year’, and we think he was right.

This year has truly embodied those teachings—a mix of triumphs and challenges, bold action and deep reflection, times of overwhelming uncertainty, and moments of incredible clarity. Through it all, we’ve found the courage to move forward, staying true to our mission and supported by our amazing community.

Join us as we look back on the moments that defined this sacred year and share the exciting plans we’re building for 2025.

1. Sharing Big Ideas & Making an Impact Globally

This year, Indigenous Box was honored to take the stage at some high profile and impactful events around the globe, sharing groundbreaking ideas and leading important conversations about Indigenous trade and economic reconciliation:

Inter-Indigenous Trade & Free Trade Zones:

At APEC Peru 2024, Mallory shared our vision for Indigenous Free Trade Zones (IFTZs), emphasizing their potential to create equitable global trade opportunities for Indigenous entrepreneurs. This bold idea sparked conversations among leaders from across continents, recognizing the value of Indigenous-driven economic models.

A Voice in Brazil:

Representing Indigenous Box and Canada at trade meetings in Brazil, Mallory engaged with Indigenous leaders, government officials, and international organizations. These discussions reinforced the importance of collaboration and brought attention to the systemic barriers faced by Indigenous businesses in accessing global markets.

Inspiring Policy in Canada:

The ideas Mallory shared on global stages didn’t just stay abroad—they found their way back to Canada in ways we couldn’t miss. Government and business leaders began weaving concepts from her talks at events like APEC Peru and the Brazil trade meetings into their speeches and articles. While attribution of her ideas was, let’s say, “optional,” we recognized her influence shaping national and international conversations on economic reconciliation. It’s a reminder of how powerful Indigenous-led solutions are—and why it’s essential to keep pushing for recognition and equity in these critical spaces.

Inspiring Entrepreneurship

In 2024, we were proud to inspire and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs at key events:

Shopify Indigenous Business Days in Toronto:

Mallory joined Indigenous entrepreneurs from across the country, sharing insights and celebrating the innovative spirit of our communities.

ImpactX at St. FX University:

Speaking to aspiring entrepreneurs, Mallory shared her journey of resilience, bold thinking, and building Indigenous Box, encouraging others to dream big and take action.

Distinguished Alumni Award & Keynote:
Mallory was deeply honored to return to her alma mater, MacEwan University, to accept the Distinguished Alumni Award and deliver the convocation keynote to thousands of graduates. In her address, she celebrated not just her personal journey but also the collective achievements of Indigenous Box, our team, and our community—reinforcing that every milestone is a shared success.

2. Building a Professional Team

Four years ago, we were working out of our basement, trying to sell 50 boxes. Today, the growth we dreamed of has brought incredible opportunities—but it has also been painful and at times even threatened our survival. Growth exposes cracks, creates new challenges, and forces tough decisions. This year, we leaned on our team, our community, and our values to navigate these growing pains and build a foundation for the future.

Regaining Financial Control – Joyce Stokes:

With over 20 years of experience as a bookkeeper, Joyce Stokes brings a mind that strives for order and a heart dedicated to helping people. She has been instrumental in helping us regain financial control by implementing proven processes to manage data effectively and ensuring we’re ahead of the game—not behind. Joyce’s expertise allowed us to focus on growth and stability during a time when survival felt uncertain.

Jonathan Collins’ Legacy of Leadership:

Jonathan Collins joined us as our first critical hire in 2024, but his connection to Indigenous Box began even earlier. When a spot opened, last minute, in our entourage to the Reservation Economic Summit (RES) in Las Vegas, Jon stepped in. The trip basically turned into a week-long interview where we really got to know each other. During that time, Jon embraced the opportunity to learn about our vision, values, and mission while sharing his own insights and strengths.

During RES, it became clear that Jon would be the perfect addition to our team, and we invited him to join Indigenous Box. Over the next ten months, Jon became a cornerstone of our growth. He helped us learn to trust key employees with critical tasks, paving the way for team expansion and real delegation. His patience, wisdom, and professionalism improved processes, built trust, and laid the groundwork for future hires to thrive.

As Jonathan took over B2B sales, his care and attention earned glowing feedback from customers, who appreciated how easy and enjoyable he made their experience.

In 2025, Jon is moving on to pursue his studies. We will miss him deeply, but we are profoundly grateful for the foundation he helped build and the care he brought to every aspect of his role and we are excited to watch him flourish in the next phase of his personal growth.

Strengthening Our Supply Chain and Building Operational Capacity – Carlos Gonzales and Shijin Thomas:

As a Supply Chain Professional and Industrial Engineer with extensive experience in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma and Continuous Improvement, Carlos quickly tackled inefficiencies and improved our supply chain management and operations.

Shijin Thomas, a dedicated and industrious supply chain professional, brought exceptional skills in logistics, and operational coordination. His ability to prioritize issues and drive efficiency has been invaluable.

A few highlights - in just three months, Carlos and Shijin:

  • Achieved near 98% inventory accuracy, recognizing that inventory is our lifeblood.
  • Reduced on-hand inventory to free up cash, a critical move for our financial health.
  • Reorganized our warehouse for efficiency and streamlined procurement processes.
  • Guided us through our busiest season (Q3), navigating Canada Post strikes and high demand with minimal disruptions.

Their expertise has been transformative, giving us the operational strength to grow without breaking.

“Stuff and Fluff with Love” – Amber Sibeon’s Care:
Amber Sibeon, who joined us on the same day as Carlos and Shijin, brought warmth and care to every corner of her role in customer service and production. Her motto, “stuff and fluff with love,” captures the heart she puts into every package, but her contributions go far beyond that. Amber cares deeply for our customers, going the extra mile to ensure they feel valued and heard. She is the embodiment of what we strive to deliver in every interaction.

Dedicated Casual Staff:
None of this would be possible without the dedication of our casual staff, both new and long-time team members, including Jody Hartman, Jessica Yawnghwe, and Blair Wilkie. Their hard work and commitment have been invaluable in helping us navigate our busiest seasons and maintain the quality and care that Indigenous Box is known for.

Looking Ahead to 2025:
Growth continues to demand more from us, and we’re preparing for what’s next. In 2025, we’ll welcome a new Sales Coordinator to take over Jonathan’s role in managing B2B relationships. We’re also very excited to bring in a senior leader in E-commerce and Digital Strategy, whose extensive experience growing another well-known Canadian brand will propel us to the next level and beyond. In collaboration with Carlos and Shijin’s continued expertise, we are confident that our team is ready to meet the challenges ahead and grow stronger together.

3. Personal Growth & Leadership

2024 has been a year of growth not just for our business, but for us as leaders. As Indigenous Box evolves, so too does our understanding of what it means to lead—with courage, humility, and a commitment to learning.

Kham Stepping Into Co-CEO Responsibilities:
This year marked a significant shift as Kham officially embraced the role of Co-CEO—a role he had already been fulfilling in practice. Kham’s deep involvement in every aspect of strategy, communications, operations, and decision-making became increasingly pivotal as our business faced new challenges. Stepping into the Co-CEO role was more than a change in title; it was a recognition of the shared leadership that drives Indigenous Box forward. Together, we’ve strengthened our partnership as co-leaders, blending our unique strengths to navigate the complexities of growth.

Re-committing to Bold Action and Big Thinking:
Bold action and big thinking have always been at the core of Indigenous Box, but this year required a deeper commitment to those principles. We’ve had to make tough decisions, take calculated risks, and push beyond our comfort zones to build the foundation for future success. Embracing bold thinking doesn’t mean ignoring fear—it means moving forward in spite of it, trusting in our vision and the strength of our team. This mindset has allowed us to grow beyond what we thought possible, even when the path felt uncertain.

Recognizing the Importance of Self-Care in Business Success:
Perhaps one of the most profound lessons this year has been the realization that self-care isn’t just a personal priority—it’s a business strategy. As leaders, we’ve faced moments of exhaustion and overwhelm, times when the weight of responsibility felt too heavy. But we’ve also learned that taking care of ourselves allows us to show up more fully for our team, our customers, and our mission. Whether it’s carving out moments of rest or seeking support when we need it, we’ve come to understand that self-care is essential to sustainable leadership.

4. Seeking Mentorship and Building Connections

2024 has been a year of profound learning, collaboration, and mentorship as we continue to scale Indigenous Box. From expert advisors to peer leaders and specialized projects, we’ve drawn on the wisdom and skills of incredible individuals to guide us through this transformative year.

Strategy Sessions with Lisa Baroldi:
For much of the first half of the year, we were privileged to work closely with Lisa Baroldi, a powerhouse in business and community leadership with extensive expertise in global business strategy. Lisa’s experience spans continents, industries, and groundbreaking initiatives—from economic development projects in Canada and the UAE to innovative collaborations for underserved communities.

Lisa brought a unique global perspective to our strategy sessions, helping us explore how Indigenous Box could position itself not just as a national leader but as a global example of innovative Indigenous entrepreneurship. Her ability to balance visionary thinking with practical solutions was instrumental in tackling some of the toughest questions we’ve faced as a business. Lisa challenged us to think beyond immediate obstacles and consider the bigger picture, laying the groundwork for decisions that continue to guide us. Her influence has been transformative, encouraging us to see opportunities for Indigenous trade, partnerships, and growth on a global scale.

Advice from Gerard Bourdeau:
Through Lisa, we connected with Gerard Bourdeau over video, and in-person, while attending RES in Las Vegas. Gerry is a groundbreaking business leader, coach and a very kind person who has helped guide many companies through pivotal stages of growth, including coaching Tobias Lütke during e-commerce giant Shopify’s scaling journey. Gerry’s insights reinforced the importance of building strong systems, trusting our instincts, and staying focused on sustainable and scalable growth. His advice helped us anchor our vision while remaining adaptable in the face of change.

SAP Pro Bono Project:
This year, we had the privilege of collaborating with SAP experts Joseph Omidosu, Kishan Belur, and Esther Paik on a pro bono business consultation project. Their expertise helped us evaluate our processes, identify areas for improvement, and lay the groundwork for more efficient and scalable operations. Their contributions have left a lasting impact, ensuring Indigenous Box is better equipped for the challenges of growth.

Digital Transformation Interns – University of Ottawa:
Under the guidance of Channarong Intahchomphoo, an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa specializing in the societal impact of AI and robotics, we worked with a team of digital transformation interns to explore how technology can better support our business. Channarong’s expertise in responsible AI and his commitment to underserved communities provided a strong foundation for this collaboration. The interns’ work offered fresh perspectives on leveraging technology to enhance our operations and customer experiences, marking an important step toward a future-ready, scalable system. We look forward to continued collaboration with Channarong.

Joining Edmonton CEOs at River City Leaders Forum:
Kham joined the River City Leaders Forum, a peer group of Edmonton CEOs. This group has offered invaluable opportunities to share challenges, seek advice, and learn from the collective wisdom of other leaders.

5. Surviving and Thriving: Acknowledging Challenges as a Startup

2024 was a year that tested us in ways we hadn’t anticipated. While we celebrated growth and new opportunities, the realities of being a startup came into sharp focus, reminding us that every step forward requires navigating challenges that can feel overwhelming.

Mastering Cash Flow Management Amidst Corporate Client Net Terms:
One of our biggest hurdles this year (and every year) has been managing cash flow, a challenge that’s familiar to many small businesses but feels especially acute as we scale. With corporate clients often operating on lengthy net terms—sometimes 30, 60, or even 90 days—there’s a constant tension between our accounts receivable and the need to pay suppliers, staff, and operational costs on time. The strain of this mismatch has been a humbling reminder that growth doesn’t automatically mean financial ease; in fact, it often magnifies these pressures.
To address this, we’ve had to get creative and proactive. From renegotiating terms with vendors to streamlining internal processes, and working to obtain a more robust line of credit (still working on this) we’ve focused on finding solutions that keep the business moving forward while maintaining trust and reliability with everyone we work with. It’s an ongoing challenge, but one we’re meeting head-on.

Understanding That Survival Is a Win:
As a startup, survival is not guaranteed—it’s something we fight for every single day. This year, we’ve come to understand that making it through the hard times is more than just staying afloat; it’s the foundation for everything we hope to build. Every solution we find, every lesson we learn, and every challenge we overcome strengthens us for the road ahead. Survival means facing uncomfortable truths about cash flow, capacity, and risk while refusing to let those challenges define us. It means leaning on our values and vision when the path feels uncertain, trusting in the strength of our team, and celebrating the small wins that keep us moving forward.

While the challenges of 2024 have been significant, they’ve also been a reminder of why we started this journey in the first place. Each obstacle we overcome reinforces our resilience and our commitment to building something bigger than ourselves—a model for Indigenous business that inspires and uplifts others. In this way, survival is more than just a necessity; it’s a victory in its own right, and it’s what makes our growth meaningful.

6. Goals for 2025

As we look ahead to 2025, we’re embracing a bold, ambitious vision for Indigenous Box—one rooted in growth, innovation, and deep impact. This year, we’re not just thinking bigger; we’re challenging ourselves to think 10X, to reimagine what’s possible, and to use every resource at our disposal to create transformative change for our business, our suppliers, and our communities.

Embracing 10X Thinking:
One of the most profound shifts we’re adopting is the idea that 10X growth is often easier than 2X growth. This mindset pushes us to move beyond incremental changes and instead think expansively, leveraging opportunities that can create exponential impact. It’s a shift that requires courage and creativity, but it also forces us to ask the right questions and focus on what truly matters.

Leveraging Mindset Shifts and Strategies Like “Who Not How”:
Instead of asking, “How do we do this?” we’re asking, “Who can help us do this?” This shift acknowledges that growth isn’t a solo endeavor—it’s a collaborative process that requires the right people, partnerships, and expertise. By focusing on building a strong, capable team and cultivating strategic partnerships, we’re positioning Indigenous Box to scale in ways that align with our mission and values.

Focusing on Data-Driven Decision-Making to Grow While Creating Impact:
Growth without impact isn’t enough for us. This year, we’re committing to using data to guide our decisions, ensuring that every step we take contributes to both business success and meaningful outcomes for our suppliers and communities. By understanding our metrics and acting on insights, we’re solidifying our business model, where growth and impact go hand in hand.

Shortening the Gap Between Idea and Execution:
One of the key lessons from 2024 has been the importance of trusting our instincts and acting quickly. In 2025, we’re committing to reducing the time it takes to move from idea to action, recognizing that agility and decisiveness are essential for growth. Whether it’s launching new initiatives, solving challenges, or seizing opportunities, we’re focused on moving with intention and speed.

Committing to Growth to Benefit Suppliers and Communities:
At Indigenous Box, growth is never just about us. It’s about creating opportunities for the Indigenous businesses we work with, strengthening supply chains, and building a model that uplifts entire communities. When we grow, our suppliers grow. When we succeed, the impact ripples outward, creating economic opportunities and building a legacy of resilience and prosperity.

2025 is about stepping into the future with clarity, confidence, and an unwavering commitment to our mission. By thinking 10X, collaborating strategically, and acting with purpose, we’re setting the stage for a year of transformative growth that benefits everyone connected to Indigenous Box.

8. Gratitude for Our Customers

As we reflect on 2024, one of the greatest sources of inspiration and motivation has been you—our customers. Your support, trust, and shared commitment to economic reconciliation have been at the heart of everything we do.

Celebrating Customers as Partners in Economic Reconciliation:
Every order placed, every box gifted, and every collaboration we’ve undertaken has been a step toward creating meaningful change. Our customers are not just consumers; you are partners in a mission to build stronger Indigenous supply chains, create opportunities for Indigenous entrepreneurs, and drive economic reconciliation. Your decision to support Indigenous Box is a powerful statement that businesses can make a difference, and we are endlessly grateful to walk this journey with you.

We are constantly inspired by the thoughtfulness and intention you bring to your partnerships with Indigenous Box. Whether it’s a heartfelt gift for a colleague, a large-scale corporate collaboration, or an individual purchase, your choices have a ripple effect. Each box tells a story of resilience, innovation, and community, and we’re committed to sharing that story with you in meaningful ways.
In 2025, we’re doubling down on our commitment to delight and inspire you—through thoughtful product curation, exceptional service, and by showcasing the tangible impact your purchases create. Together, we’re building something bigger than a business; we’re fostering a movement that uplifts Indigenous businesses and communities.

Thank you for being part of this journey and for believing in the power of Indigenous business. Your support fuels our mission and reminds us why we do what we do. Here’s to another year of partnership, growth, and shared impact!

Your partnership doesn’t just benefit us—it amplifies the stories and successes of the Indigenous makers, suppliers, and communities we work with every day. When we grow, they grow, and the ripple effects touch families, communities, and future generations.
