Our communities and nations have practiced forms of governance where women play pivotal roles. When I think of this, I am reminded of many women I have met along my journey including some from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, a nation that operates on a matrilineal system where women hold significant authority. Women who were the ones responsible for selecting and advising Chiefs, maintain social order and preserve cultural traditions. This form of leadership ensures that decisions are made with the welfare of the entire community in mind and are reflective of a harmonious balance between genders.
Four years ago today, we signed our incorporation documents. We knew, deep down, that this step would change our lives, but we could never have imagined just how much. The idea behind Indigenous Box was simple yet bold: to think without limits, to create something bigger than ourselves, and to do it in a way that is true to who I am as a nehiyaw (Cree) woman.
2024 marked our sacred fourth year at Indigenous Box—a milestone rooted in nehiyaw teachings of balance, cycles, and interconnectedness. From sharing bold ideas on global stages like APEC Peru and Brazil to building a stronger team and overcoming the challenges of growth, this year was a mix of triumphs and reflections. Join us as we celebrate the moments that defined 2024 and share our bold vision for 2025.
Standing at the entrance of this massive structure, I took a deep breath and quietly reminded myself of why I was here. This wasn’t just a moment for me. I couldn’t help but feel emotional, reflecting on my journey: a quiet girl from the reserve, raised to believe in the power of community, now standing as an influential voice on the global stage. "Community values, shared abundance, reciprocity... these are the principles that brought you here," I reminded myself.
"We decided to believe that our vision was not only possible but necessary. And overdue. This company would operate at the nexus of traditional values and modern efficiency."
